The In-Between Space of Fractional CFO Leadership
Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the direction our industry is headed.
The role of the fractional CFO has evolved. We’re seeing more demand for strategic support, forward-looking insights, and financial leadership that goes well beyond just reconciling books. That’s a good thing.
Businesses need that kind of guidance now more than ever.
But I can’t help but wonder: are we unintentionally making this role less accessible to the businesses that actually need it most?
Small Businesses Caught in the Middle
So many small businesses are stuck in the middle.
- They’ve outgrown basic bookkeeping.
- They know they need deeper insight to grow with intention.
- But they’re not ready or able to bring on a full strategic CFO.
And that’s where things get tricky. Without that bridge between the day-to-day financials and long-term planning, these businesses are left making major decisions with incomplete information and no real support.
Bridging Strategy and Execution
This isn’t just a theoretical issue—I see it firsthand. At BluRayne, I’ve been focused on helping clients navigate that in-between space by blending operational finance with strategic leadership in a way that’s actually attainable.
But I don’t think any of us have the full answer yet.
So I’m genuinely curious—how are you approaching this?
If you’re working with small businesses (or are one yourself), what models, tools, or ideas are actually making a difference?
I’d love to hear what others are seeing out there. Let’s talk.
